Happy Valley-Goose Bay

Happy Valley-Goose Bay, located in the heart of Labrador, is home to the Canadian Forces Base, 5 Wing Goose Bay, where Canadian Forces are stationed. Surrounding Happy Valley-Goose Bay is vast lands of forest with peaks and valleys dotted and scoured by lakes and rivers. Given its surrounding topography and hydrology this area is an ideal breeding ground for black flies and mosquitoes.

Since 1997, GDG has been contracted for the biting fly control program at the CFB 5 Wing Goose Bay, under contract with Serco. GDG is responsible for reducing the population of biting flies providing a better quality of life outdoors, during the spring and summer, for employees and residents of the base, without interrupting or disturbing the food chain and the environment or other species.

VectoBac 1200L and VectoBac 200G are bio-rational larvicides used for the treatment of surface waters and streams within 2 to 10 kilometers of the base for the reduction of biting flies. Over the years, GDG has mapped all productive development sites within the control perimeter of the base, giving us a unique and intimate knowledge of the required actions to attain a 90% reduction in biting fly populations.

We want to build upon positive energy, understanding that the Goose Bay Sheshatshiu community has intricate ties to mother earth. Steps are taken to determine where our interventions occur on aboriginal lands and hunting and trapping grounds. Communication is undertaken to ensure all stakeholders are familiar with the product, understand its specificity and ensure that we do not disrupt any hunting or trapping activities.
